"I know you're waiting to come to me." Ebenezer said coldly to the air. "Show yourself, Ghost of Christmas Future. I want this nightmare over with."
The air was smokey and thick all of a sudden. It was terribly cold, and Ebenezer stared into the room. He was ready. Tall and thin, wearing a darker-than-night cloaked hood, was the Ghost of Christmas Future, wearing a deer skull mask.
"The Ghost of Christmas Future, I presume." Ebenezer said. "What terrifying dream are you going to force on me?"
A deep chuckle came from the tall figure. "Yes, Ebenezer. I'm here to show you what will happen if you continue this way of life. After seeing Nikolas, though, you've opened your eyes, hmm?" He reached out with a bony hand and grabbed Ebenezer's forehead roughly. The warlord was shoved into a reverie he was not to forget.
Smoke filled the air. It took a moment for Ebenezer to realize that the dream-mist had lifted and this was what he was being shown. His body was weightless as he walked through the destroyed town. It took Ebenezer only a moment to realize that it was his town that was destroyed. On the remains of buildings that had been bombed or burned was the sign of Ebenezer's army, carved and painted wherever it would fit.
In his wieghtless body the warlord ran through the streets, coming to the building he cared about most. Most of the workship was destroyed. He climbed over the rubble and stopped dead.
Though it was bombed, Ebenezer could see that the walls had been painted a dark blue, incoherent writing in white and black on the wall. The ground was littered with toy soldiers, their perfect faces all emotionless, and all of their uniforms the same dark blue. Broken, larger soldiers, most life-sized or a little smaller, were extremely detailed renditions of Ebenezer. Some were dressed like civilians, some like soldiers, and some like supreme warlords.
But it was not the destroyed building, the amazing amount of identical little soldiers, or obsessively detailed figures of him that made Ebenezer stop dead in his tracks. It was the body laying limply on the floor. Nikolas' robes were tattered, his wounds clotted with ash and dust, and his snow-white hair stained from the pool of blood around him.
There was a strange sensation as someone walked through the warlord's weightless body. He realized that it was him, the Future Ebenezer. The warlord looked ghostly; skin so deathly pale that he looked blueish in the light. His silver eyes were like ice, completely emotionless even with that scene before him. He scowled down at Nick's body.
Future Ebenezer knelt down next to the inventor, the wizard, the only person who he had ever truly loved. He whispered something under his breath, kissing Nikolas' cold lips softly. From his coat, Ebenezer took out an intricately-detailed pistol, probably the only one of its kind, looked down at Nick one last time, opened his mouth, situated the barrel accordingly, and pulled the trigger.
Ebenezer, the one with the weightless body, couldn't feel that body. He didn't know how to react to what he just saw. He stared down at the two bodies, laying next to each other, their blood mixing. One died of blood loss and trauma to the head, while the other died of his own hands. Would Nikolas have killed himself if he found Ebenezer dead? Apparently Ebenezer would return the favor. The warlord barely felt the tears stream down his cheeks.
The Ghost of Christmas Future released Ebenezer's forehead, bringing him back to the present, in his tent in the war encampment. The warlord looked up at Future, tears now streaming down his face, blurring and stinging his eyes. "I have seen the error of my ways."
Future stood there, looking down at the dark-haired young man. "Ebenezer, I am glad that you have seen what you have done wrong. Now can you fix it?"
"If I have the power to command a hundred thousand men and take over the world, I certainly have the power to right my wrongs." Ebenezer said, starting to get dressed again. Future did not seem to mind.
"Of course, Ebenezer, you have your dignity as a warlord to uphold."
"That doesn't matter if it's going to kill Nikolas." He replied, shrugging on his long coat. "I don't want anything to happen to him."
"You can still command, of course. You just have to find your heart."
Ebenezer stood for a moment, just looking at the spirit, thinking. Finally, he said, "My heart is back home. I always knew it was there." From under the deer mask, Future smiled. In one fluid motion he took off the skull mask, to reveal himself to the warlord.
Ebenezer's silver eyes, his coal-black hair, his face, his smile. The only thing that belonged to this spirit was his snow-shadow blue skin, his height, and the strange white warpaint on his face. He touched Ebenezer's shoulder, squeezing it lightly. "Go to Nikolas. The wind will be with you, as will the snow. You will be courteous to everyone you see; whether they are rich or poor, ill or in the best of health. You shall not terrorize henceforth, but command your army with respect for your men. And you will not slay another being just because they go against you."
The warlord nodded to the spirit which shared his image. With that, the Ghost of Christmas Past was gone, and Ebenezer found a pouch of money, put on his hat, slipped his antler-handled knife into his boot, and went off to find the fastest horse that they had.
